University of Bologna, Italy
Matteo Ferrara is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DISI) at the University of Bologna. His research focuses on Pattern Recognition, Computer Vision, Image Processing, and Machine Learning. He earned his Bachelor's degree cum laude in Computer Science from the University of Bologna in 2004, followed by a Master's degree cum laude in 2005, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2009. His applied research is primarily centered on Biometric Systems, including fingerprint recognition, performance evaluation of biometric technologies, scanner quality assessment, face and palmprint recognition, and template protection. He is a member of the Biometric System Laboratory (BioLab), an internationally recognized research group in the field of biometrics. He is one of the organizers of FVC-onGoing, a prominent international initiative for the performance evaluation of fingerprint recognition algorithms. He also co-authored the widely cited Minutia Cylinder-Code (MCC) fingerprint recognition algorithm. Notably, he was the first to demonstrate that face morphing can be used to deceive automated border control (ABC) systems. He has authored numerous scientific publications and has contributed to both national and European research projects. He has served as a reviewer for leading international journals and conferences, including the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. He is also the holder of a patent in fingerprint recognition.
